Championships and Competitions

Like most societies, we have the obligatory Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin competitions at each event.

However our 5 events over the year are seperate championships, with a seperate trophy to be won on the day. These are straight forward stableford competitions, and the 5 events make up our year long Order of Merit competition, and provide the format for our Knockout Competition to be played.

At each event we also have a Team competition, based on the combined or average stableford score of each 3 or 4 ball. We also have a 2's competiton, where any gross 2 scored on a hole counts. We have had a 2 on a par 5, Micheal Wakley-Smith holed his second shot on the Par 5 14th at Sweetwoods Park in 2013.

Below is a little more detail.

DSL Chamionships

These 5 Championships were formaly introduced with the Order of Merit in 2005, and they provide the platform for all our other competitions.

1st Event - Brian Rudkin Shield, played in April

2nd Event - DSL Open Cup, played in May

3rd Event - Dave Gillett Shield, played in June

4th Event - DSL Masters Shield, played in July

5th Event - DSL Classic Trophy, played in September

DSL Order of Merit

The DSL Order of Merit was introduced in 2005. The idea was to create a competition that worked on a league basis, with each person accumulating points based on where they finished each of the 5 events over the year, to find a DSL Order of Merit Champion.

Over the years this has been refined and adjusted, and now provides alot of fun and competition for our members. Our unique handicaping system ensures that all our members have the opportunity to win any one of the 5 events and consequently the Order of Merit too. The Order of Merit always comes down to the last event of the year, and with the field going out in reverse order of the current Order of Merit standings, this adds the extra bit of spice and nerves to the day.

DSL Knockout Trophy

The DSL Knockout Trophy started to add another dimension to the each event, and something that would generate some further interest for our Members. The format is quite simple, a draw is undertaken before the 1st event that lays out the path to the final. Drawn members play against one another in pairs, and the person with the highest stableford points goes through to the next round. if they are tied, its on conuntback.

It has brought alot of extra fun and tension into each event and has been enjoyed by all. Andy Jones, a former member of DSL, kindly donated a fantastic trophy for the event that gets better each year.
